In the news:

  • State Sen. Mark Chelgren, R-Ottumwa, has introduced Senate File 2044, which proposes in such instances that security costs at county courthouses be deducted from the salaries of the chief judges of the respective judicial districts. The deduction would occur on a dollar-for-dollar basis until the annual salary of the chief judge is reduced to not less than $25,000.

The bill would also require, in such cases, that the judicial branch reimburse counties on a monthly basis of $2 per square foot for the space used by the judicial branch in a county courthouse.

“This bill basically says that the courts have a right to define the judges’ chambers — as far as weapons-free zones,” Chelgren told the Des Moines Register. “But if they choose to take any more of the courthouse where people go for their constitutional rights to vote, to pay property taxes, those kinds of things — the courts are responsible for making sure that armed security is provided for.” – Des Moines Register January 17, 2018
